Implementation of the ATEX Directive

What is the ATEX Directive?

This legislation requires the implementation of technical and organisational protection and prevention measures in order to avoid the formation of explosive atmospheres, the deflagration of an explosion and its propagation – ATEX.

Explosive Atmospheres” are atmospheres made up of mixtures of air with flammable substances (gases, vapours, mists or dusts) in which, after ignition, combustion spreads to the entire unburned mixture.

Decree-Law 236/2003 of 30th September, which transposes Directive 1999/92/EC of 16th December, better known as the “ATEX Directive ”,

defines the rules for the protection of workers against the risks of exposure to explosive atmospheres, as well as the penalties resulting from failure to comply with them.

The consequences of an explosion can be catastrophic, in human and property terms, and even in terms of the continuity of the activity, causing irreparable damage to the physical integrity and health of workers, and can also lead to the loss of lives.
